Since the establishment of
I.R.D. Kiltimagh, a significant emphasis has been placed in the development
of arts and culture, as part of the organisations
overall activities.
Over the years a number
of initiatives have been taken to compliment and enhance the existing
artistic and cultural heritage of Kiltimagh and to incorporate the arts
within the overall development plan for the town, as an instrument to promote
the economic and social advancement of its people.
In addition to the
varied artistic programme, which is drawn up on a year by year basis,
significant investment has been targeted toward putting appropriate
artistic infrastructure in place as a long-term resource for the community.
As a result a number of
multi-functional arts spaces have been developed within the town including
the Town Hall Theatre, Exhibition Centre, Sculpture Park and Artist Retreats.
During the Summer of
1993 a Sculpture Symposium was held in Kiltimagh, whereby sculptors of
national renown assisted by local students, created the 10 pieces of
Sculpture on display in this Park at the old Railway Station.
A sculpture in Elm by Jackie McKenna is here to reflect the numberous efforts of the local community to mould the
economic revival of Kiltimagh and its hinterland at the end of the 20th
Century, following the ravages of unemployment and emigration of the more
recent years.
Music is also an
integral part of life in Kiltimagh. Music is taught in both primary
and secondary schools, at the Glór Mill Centre
and a weekly traditional Irish music session with an average of eight musicians takes place every Sunday evening in O'Horas public house. The “Electric Mouse
“is a very popular live music venue with a wide variety of artists
performing each weekend ranging from rock to ballad to jazz and
reggae.
