NEW ERA FOR EAST MAYO EMPLOYMENT AS SOD TURNED ON NEW CENTRE:
A new era has dawned in East Mayo with the turning of
the sod on the official launch of the IRD Kiltimagh Ltd. driven, Cairn
International Trade Centre, in Kiltimagh.
The €7m Cairn International Trade Centre will comprise
of 32,000 sq. ft. of high end office space which will provide employment for
150 people. The project which targets private sector projects which can
‘decentralise’ to Kiltimagh, has been inspired by the Governments
Decentralisation Programme for the public sector, the success of the Western
Development Commission’s “Look West” Campaign and the desire generally for
people to live and work in rural areas. The project is also seeking to
redress the imbalance in relation to the high level of third level
educational participation of Mayo but an unfortunate low level of graduate
employment. It is hoped that many of the young people of the area will be
able to remain resident in the East Mayo Region and contribute to the local
economy as a direct result of the new project.
Construction work on the project will commence in the
next few weeks in a contract which has been awarded by I.R.D. Kiltimagh Ltd.
to J. J. Rhattigan & Co., Galway. The overall project will take just over
one year to complete and initial occupancy is anticipated for January 2009.
The
‘Sod Turning’ was performed by I.R.D. Financial Controller, Sadie Mulhern
and during the formal ceremony Brian Mooney, Chairman of I.R.D. Kiltimagh
Ltd. spoke of the difference that this project will make to the Kiltimagh
area. “To have 150 extra people in white collar jobs in the area will help
to secure the future of Kiltimagh and the surrounding towns for generations
to come”. He also spoke of “each town needing to have its own identity and
the fact that Kiltimagh has always aimed high and this project was no
exception, in striving to provide world class office space. He also spoke of
the need to have a sense of ‘Community’ and how all sectors in the community
must some together and support each other in order to survive and prosper”.
The Cairn Trade Centre will be located on the Swinford
Road in Kiltimagh. It will accept first tenants from January 2009. It
comprises 15 office suites which vary in size from 1000 to 3000 sq. ft. and
which can be amalgamated to larger unit sizes if necessary. Each suite will
have full air conditioned heating and cooling, access to fibre based
broadband, as well as self contained toilet and shower facilities,
centralised reception and underground carparking.

Decentralisation for
Kiltimagh.
Decentralisation to the East
Mayo town of Kiltimagh will soon become a reality with the development of a
new high tech Business Park project aimed at projects already established in
the urban centres of Ireland and beyond. Final Planning Approval has issued
from Mayo County Council for the project which is to be located on the
Swinford Road in Kiltimagh. This ambitious and far-sighted project is the
brainchild of IRD Kiltimagh Ltd. and came out of a series of meetings with
the local community, which identified this flagship project as being the way
forward for the Kiltimagh area. Seeing that the Governments decentralisation
programme had passed the town by, but realising the potential that private
sector decentralisation would, have has been a key spur for the project.
The project when completed,
will provide 32,000 sq. ft. of very high standard workspace aimed at those
projects which could employ predominantly graduates from the Kiltimagh and
broader Mayo area. “These private sector projects could already be operating
in the main urban centres in Ireland or indeed overseas, but part or all of
their operation could be transferred to the new facility” said IRD Kiltimagh
Chairman, Brian Mooney in recent days.
“The new centre will target
high level projects in the financial services, consultancy, insurance,
information technology, and technical support sectors among others. It will
rely on the quality of workspace on offer, the value for money that it will
offer, the quality of life it will offer employees of any project locating
there;, i.e. no traffic congestion, clean air, affordable housing, high
quality educational facilities, a high level of services and so on, to
compete with the larger urban centres, With the state of the art
communications systems in place in Kiltimagh, there is no reason for any
project to choose a city location over this small but growing town” he
added. “We know that Mayo has one of the highest rates of third level
participation of any county in the country but our problem is that we
provide few opportunities for these graduates to be employed in Mayo. Their
qualification is in effect, a passport for exile. This project seeks to
address that, and attempts to keep the cream of our younger generations from
having to leave the county to find work. It also links well with the Western
Development Commission’s, ‘Look West’ campaign, which we feel will have a
large impact in years to come. It has proven the point that people want to
live and work in the West of Ireland if they are given the opportunity to do
so” he concluded.
On completion, the new
building could accommodate up to 130 people in anything up to14 different
projects depending on their scale. It will be laid out in a series of suites
which can be tailored to suit the individual clients. Each suite will be
completely self contained, having all facilities, including its own
toilets/shower facilities. All suites will be air-conditioned and have
access to fibre based broadband, capitalising on the installation of the
Metropolitan Area Network put in place in Kiltimagh a couple of years ago.
To date, Enterprise Ireland
has approved the sum of €300,000 in grant aid. While this is a small
fraction of the amount of money necessary to complete the project, it has
instilled a huge sense that the project is appropriate for the development
of the region and given the confidence to move forward.
The technical team has been
appointed to bring the project forward and expressions of interest have
already been invited from competent building contractors for the work which
should start early in 2007. The works concerned will take approximately 15
months to complete and Kiltimagh will then have state of the art workspace
with which it will be able to compete with the larger urban centres for some
of the most prestigious projects in the country.
